Too Good To Be True? 6 Ways To Verify A Dating Profile

You’re chatting with another ROMEO and it’s going great. You’re both looking for a long-term thing and the vibe is right. But still, you ask yourself the question: are they too good to be true?

At ROMEO, we catch 94% of fraudulent profiles within one day. 60% of those are caught within just one hour. We do this using AI systems and the hard work of our support and anti-fraud teams. But our anti-fraud process wouldn’t be complete without the help of you, our users. Which is why it’s important to remember: if you see a suspicious profile, report it. Reporting helps us keep ROMEO safe and secure!

Here are 6 questions to ask yourself if you’re trying to verify a profile.

1. What does the profile description say?

Is there any text at all on the profile? It’s a good sign when the text in their description is in line with the conversation you’re having, their stats, and the photos in their gallery.

2. When was this profile created?

It helps to check how long a user has been on the platform. You can check the month and year they joined ROMEO by scrolling to the bottom of their profile and looking under their stats or friends list. Having the same profile for a longer period adds more authenticity to your profile. Think twice before deleting your profile on Monday!

3. Do their photos make sense?

Check their pics. It can always be a good sign if their photos have been taken on several different occasions at different times.

4. Are they verified?

Is the verification badge next to their name blue? If yes – then they are verified by our verification process. You can always click on the badge for more information, and read more about how user verification works on our Safety page.

5. Are they quick to ask you to take the conversation outside of ROMEO?

If a user is asking you to take the conversation to another platform shortly after you start texting, you might want to think twice. Make sure you feel comfortable before sharing your phone number or moving on to other channels.

6. Are they sending you weird links?

Are you getting one of those messages that ask you to click on a link right away? Does the text sound generic, like it was produced by a robot or a sketchy translation machine? In that case, you might wanna click that report button.

Now keep in mind, this blog is just a collection of tips to help you navigate your conversations with other ROMEOs. Don’t share personal data with another user.

Report, Report, Report

Reporting suspicious profiles is the best way that you, as a user can work with us against fraudsters and scammers. ROMEO is a secure platform and we want to keep it that way. 💙

A real life Mr. ‘Too Good to Be True’?

On the other hand, some profiles often get reported as fake when they are, in fact, real. Some users may just have high quality photos or look too much like a model or a porn actor. This can make a lot of users doubt if these profiles belong to real people. Yes, being too pretty has its downsides. 🥲

If you are a user who is always wrongly reported as fake, we advise you to fill in as many stats as possible in your profile and to make sure you write a personalized text about yourself.

Also, it’s very important to have a diversity of photos taken at different times and locations. All of these things can add more authenticity to your profile.
